Good for kids
For the record, I have always been more of a salt water fish guy. Snapper, Grouper, even the occasional flounder if I'm feeling a little lost, but not after happening upon this hidden gem in the deep South. Upon a hard earned entry you are greeted with a stunning vista of majestic trout in their natural habitat. The trout per square meter ratio was phenomenal in itself, and you are even gifted with a viewing optimizer to really see the true beauty as they glide so effortlessly through the water, as if to mock our own relative clumsiness. I will never be the same after such an experience, and neither will you. I would give more stars, but I need to stay strong and show myself and the world I'm still in control after such a whirlwind encounter.

Maybe worthwhile for kids. For the entry rotating gate, you must pull and hold it towards you then insert 2 The guy who went before us couldn't get in after inserting his coin. In places the viewing glass is scuffed and dirty.
Very cool place to show the kids some trout. Water very clean and for 2 you can't go wrong. Met the guy Greg who runs it and if it wasn't for home I doubt this would exist anymore. Awesome work Greg, keep it up!
There was a sign that said closed. We went in anyway, because Google said open 24 hours, and the visitor centre lady changed my money so I could enter the gate. After paying 2 to open the gate for each person we found the observatory to have just 1 adult fish and 1 baby fish and in another tank a fresh water lobster the size of a toe. Also found the exit gate turns inwards so you can save yourself 2 and go on the exit gate if you desperately want to see 1.1 trout. Disappointing creepy place. Go and see the Takahe at the bird sanctuary further down the road, it's free and not a total waste of your time.
Want to see Trout Fish? Go visit Te Anau Trout Observatory, NZ2.00 per entry. Just use coin machine to enter. No staff or any other facilities. Just go down the stairs from the road frontage and come out from the other end. There are large trout fish in the tank. If you are lucky you may see some Eels. Worth a visit if you have time.
My friends and I traveled from Auckland to Te Anau purely to see the much esteemed Trout Observatory. Unfortunately upon arrival we found it to be closed. Still a great experience and I could tell this place was not just a dark potentially dangerous crack den but a thriving aquarium of global standard. 10/10 would go again
The jewel in the crown .
Not worth stopping at all, even if it was free! Much better free fish observatories in NZ... Just about got bigger goldfish in our pond lol!
