My partner and I didn't realise when we booked a random getaway to Torquay that most dinners out required reservations. Walking around we stopped at various restaurants with good Google ratings but we were turned away because they were fully booked for the night. When we came upon The Elephant, we were confident they would be booked, having read many good things and the fact they were Michelin rated. Luck was upon us as a table had just opened up. Although we were under dressed, we took advantage of the opportunity and are so glad we did! We were greeted so calmly and kindly before being seated to the table, with an apology that there would be a wait before someone could see to us. The service was phenomenal. The food was superb. The modern British fare was both creative and masterful in execution. The ingredients were very fresh. The wine menu was wonderfully understated and the recommended pairings were perfect. For those who ask (although a seasonal menu), for starters we had a refreshing crab cocktail with mango sorbet and a delightful fresh yet savoury scallop dish. For our mains, we had the plaice with asparagus and apple in a mussel broth and the monkfish with bok choy in a lemongrass and Thai lime basil sauce. We paired these with a seasonal white French chardonnay and ended the meal with a marscapone parfait with strawberries and merengue. We highly recommend The Elephant, it certainly brightened up our trip/day.

Lovely food, great service and a nice choice of wines! My main of monk fish was utterly divine. The potato dauphinoise and green bean side were lush too. The potato terrine was also gorgeous! I'd love more choice of wines by the glass, but excellent if you both want to drink red/ white. Great time had all round!

Wonderful. Sums it up really. From the moment you enter you are treated like royalty. It was my partner's birthday and it was recognised in a subtle, grown-up way. No singing waiters but a lovely card and a Happy Birthday plate and chocolate. But that's really beside the point. The food was outstanding. I won't describe it as the menu changes but I would be confidant that anything from this kitchen will be fabulous. Friendly and efficient service - the absolute perfect balance between decorum and friendliness. Can't be faulted.

Great food in a chic modern restaurant. The cooking style is modern, precise and not too elaborate but with lots of textures and flavours. The pictures speak for themselves but the tastes are even better than the looks. Good wine list with a variety of prices and styles. Price is very good for such quality. Staff are attentive.

Relaxed, Michelin starred restaurant. Set lunch menu very good value but limited choices, unless you mix & match with the a la carte. Warm welcome and friendly waiters made this a lunch to remember. The 9 mile walk back to Brixham was also memorable (it rained and we finished the walk in the dark). Would definitely recommend
