Great family fun and moderate hike. Been coming here for years and it never gets old. You can access it from the bottom and top with plenty of parking. Top of the falls access is a dirt rd but you really don't need a 4x4 to access it.

We visited Crabtree Falls around 9 AM on a Wednesday morning in early October 2020. The air was crisp with the faint smell of a distant campfire and full with the sounds of the nearby falls. We were advised to go early, because even on weekdays now the parking lot and trail fills becomes crowded quickly. When we arrived we were only a handful of vehicles parked in the lots (both upper and lower). I'd like to reiterate: come early on any day you visit and don't forget to bring 3 in cash for parking. The trail begins from the upper parking lot next to the restrooms (which were closed due to pandemic) and will quickly you to the bottom of the falls for a beautiful view. That portion of the trail is paved and easily traversed. Just before the first falls viewing area the well maintained trail continues upward. The total distance up to the top overlook is 1.7 miles with a gain in elevation of about 1000 feet. Don't give up! Keep pushing along and take breaks as you need them, because the rewards are many. You'll be taking switchbacks that provide passing views through the trees of the surrounding mountains, all the while providing numerous views of the falls, some with their own viewing areas. The terrain can be slippery, so be wary. However, wooden railings and steps are well placed throughout most of the hike up. This hike is easily my new favorite hike in VA (minus the overcrowding), with it's gorgeous rock outcroppings, technical challenge, views of the falls and it's vistas. Getting back to the parking lot and leaving was a little more challenging when it came to social distancing. As expected, people were all up and down the trail and both parking lots were full. Most people were courteous and some even wore masks.

We went here during the most recent snow. If you’re going here in snow, definitely bring your micro spikes and poles. The parking price is 3 to support the trail.

This was such an amazing experience!! My friend and I made it to the tippy top!! Which was by far the best moment to feel so accomplished!! The way down was just as beautiful! My knees and ankles are and will be sore for the upcoming days but totally worth the sights, smells, and the experiences!! Side note the toilet was dreadful which I cleaned before & after I used it! -I have a cleaning business so thankfully most of my supplies were in my trunk!-

3 parking, but may increase to 5 soon. The hike is enjoyable and easy to moderate (a two year old in our crew did it unaided for the first mile before she wore out). After a rain like of water and multiple vantage points along the way keeps it interesting.
