We spontaneously entered this particular store during our visit of Uji and we were pleasently surprised. Our first tea ceremony here was a delightful experience. I can highly recommend it. Afterwards, we wanted to buy some good quality matcha and we were carefully attended by a Frenchman working there. He patiently explained the differences of the teas and gave us advice for the right preparation and way of storage. I'd definitely go back again.

May not be as famous as some other tea shops which already made their names known internationally. This shop has very high quality tea and tea productions too. Don't miss out. They also have staff who can speak perfect English.
Very nice tea shop, payed 900 to grind my own matcha and it was worth every penny. Tobais (a swiss guy who lives in Japan) was very knowledgeable and friendly. He gave us the history of the shop (one of the oldest in Japan, used to serve tea to the shogun) and gave helpful tips and info when it came time to make our tea. The tea is very good quality and reasonably priced. Amazing experience for anyone who likes tea or is interested in Japanese history!
When you're in Uji, come here and ask for one of the owners of this tea shop, the oldest in Japan: Tobias Baer, a Swiss guy, who even talked German to us. He let us grind the matcha tea ourselves, which was surely a highlight of our Japan vacation trip! Be sure to not miss that opportunity.
Really helpful and super nice staff! Perfect for a matcha set in a traditional atmosphere :)
