I went for a five minute appointment with an oncologist. No procedure was done, just talking. I paid the 40 specialist copay with my Blue Cross PPO insurance, and expected that was it. Months later I got a bill for 400 and a bill for 251, supposedly a physician and hospital facility fee. It was shocking to receive a bill for hundreds of dollars that I had no control over and had never agreed to. I spent hours on the phone to UNC Billing and my insurance. UNC Billing just kept repeating that it is normal to bill me the 400 fee and it's normal that my insurance didn't cover it. The 251 is still in dispute. It makes me so discouraged about the world when people who are supposed to be caring for you are robbing you out of the blue and leaving you helpless to do anything about it. That does NOT make you well- it just gives you more stress. It is shocking to me that this is happening at a renowned center like UNC.

This hospital has really nice staff to help aid the patients. The children's cancer ward of the hospital is very friendly for children with lots of toys to play. The hospital even has it's own school so that children in the hospital did not get left out on their education. This hospital also has great programs for families who need financial assistance in paying their bills. Overall I think that hospital is one of the best in care, comfort,

I have been thoroughly unimpressed with this hospital. After a trip or two of traveling 2 1/2 hours just to be told a patient can't get chemo that day, staff calling for the patient to come in earlier when the patient is already on the way there (driving from 2 1/2 hrs away) or having appointments scheduled that sometimes aren't necessary and can be done locally, this is highly unacceptable for a hospital of this magnitude. This hospital needs to come up with better coordination of care for their Cancer patients to do things locally, if there is a way to do so. Also, I have caught the billing department 2 times over billing. One time for overcharging a billed co-pay. The other time, this past month (Nov. 2018), the billing department tried to re-bill my husband a year after he had a bone marrow transplant for a bill that had already been paid off entirely through a payment plan in December 2017. I promptly had my husband dispute the bill and asked for a supervisor to research their system. Turns out their billing system is screwed up and the billing dept. immediately had to fix the bill and bring my husband's account to a zero balance. Also, read the Jill Gee review below. I have had that exact experience with this hospital also.

Doctors are knowledgeable and have a good bedside manner when you can get a hold of them. Communication is nearly impossible unless you have a regularly scheduled appointment and don't attempt to change it. If you have a question or concern, you will not be able to get a hold of anyone knowledge enough to assist you via phone or the UNC web portal. Leaving messages with the desk or on voicemail does not work either. Just go to Duke.

Worst hospital ever they treated my son for 2 yrs kidney stones and teeth. But never checked his blood for Cancer. Which went his brain. He didn't understand his disease. I asked Dr and Social worker Phyllis Williams to give him a IQ test. They wouldn't. I told them my son was different in his thinking. One day they where trying to give him a spinal injection the resident Doctor that was in training pushed his spine for 30 minutes or more til I had Dr Blankenship take over. I hope no parent ever goes what I went through. I know my child and his cancer was on the brain. He couldn't think. I was his only voice but now he's dead that's Unc fault. Dr came in ER of December 2014 with your son has been coming here for 2 yrs and we never tested his blood. He has Cancer. I should of been appointed his advocate. They never tried to help us they refused to see my son Doctor ZEIDNER and Alisha poor where bad with out patient care then took my son to Duke they wouldn't treat because he was under care of UNC. I trusted theses Doctors and this hospital to help my child and they failed. I would never recommend this hospital. They are neglect. Laura
