Sarnath is an important pilgrimage point for believers of Jainism too. The 11th Jain Tirthankara Shreyanshnath was born in a village close to Sarnath. Built in 1824, the Digambar Jain Temple is also called the Shreyanshnath Jain Temple. The temple houses a large image of Shreyanshnath, and there are attractive frescoes depicting the life of Bhagwan Mahavir, founder of the Jain religion. In Jainism, tirthankara means ‘one who has detached himself from the material world’. The path to this Jain temple is lined with gardens and greenery on both sides. In Digambar monasticism, branch of Jain Dharma, this is a mus-visit point. According to history, four Tirthankaras were born close to Varanasi and therefore many Jain devotees visit Sarnath to pay their obeisance. A beautiful photograph taken from the monastic ruins in the Dhamek Stupa Compound has the three monuments; Mulagandha Kuti Vihar, the imposing Dhamek Stupa and the Digambar Jain Temple in one frame. There is no entry ticket for the temple and the timings of visit are from sunrise to sunset and the temple is easily accessible from the main road.

Wonderful place. Must visit place in Varanasi surroundings. Best time to visit in between November - February. You can hire a vehicle from Varanasi for 6 hrs which would be sufficient to visit all sites associated to Sarnath. Shri Digambar Jain Shreyansnath Mandir, Singhpuri, Sarnath is a huge ashtakod stoop (octagonal pillar) of 103 feet height is a historical establishment. It's considered to be 2200 years old. Main idol of this temple is of Shri Shreyansnath Bhagwan (blue color, 75 cm tall) in Padmāsana. Sarnath is the birthplace of 11th Teerthankar Shri Shreyansanatha. Here 4 (out of 5) kalyanak (auspicious life events) of Shreyansnath took place. The artistic work of this temple is unmatched.

A very atypical Jain temple is Sri Digamber Jain Temple. There’s non of the usual fine temple carvings. In place of sculptures, much of the decoration consists of frescos and there are shrines with sculptures of Jain tirthankaras. The temple has lots of information about the Jain faith as well. Worth a detour if visiting the Sarnath archaeological site.
