This is how history is most effectively taught! A wonderful example of how authentic history and anthropology is communicated well, this museum set in the beautiful gardens of the Villa Toeplitz Is worth spending a full day in! The collection of artifacts and photographs are carefully curated to give the visitor a great sense of the adventure that the Castiglioni brothers had and their dedication to recording the cultures that they knew were disappearing. These are then brought to life with explanatory videos that deeply connects one with the material being exhibited. Besides the wonderful collection of prehistoric rock art (11,000 years old!) casts, what struck me most was the exhibit of the life of the Tuareg which is vividly conveyed by a diorama of a Tuareg tent with an explanation of all the items and their respective uses. We have all seen human mummies, but where else would one see a mummified camel? If one is lucky enough to arrive on days when Marco Castiglioni is in the museum, one will be treated to an experience of speaking to an enthusiastic and passionate storyteller. Marco manages to convey all the salient points of the cultures of the people without overly romanticising the lives of these tribes. Talking to Marco, one is immediately entranced by the anthropology of these tribes and saddened by the loss of diversity that accompanies progress. However the sadness is balanced by the knowledge that the fact that his father and uncle managed to capture many practices on film before they were lost. I am also extremely heartened by the existence of Marco who, with knowledgeable flair, conveyed to me a huge sense of interest in the subject of African anthropology. Words nor pictures will not replace what will be an unforgettable experience in this museum, so stop reading and get yourself to this unmissable experience in Varese. It is so much more than a \visit to a museum\!

Ho trovato un museo ben curato in ogni minimo dettaglio con delle fantastiche guide che mettevano la passione in quello che spiegavano e pensavano. Questo museo, incentrato sui viaggi in Africa dei fratelli Castiglioni, è davvero un'esperienza unica e senza paragoni per chi vuole conoscere le diverse culture etniche africane. A tutto questo si aggiunge un magnifico giardino esterno al museo e un prezzo molto economico relazionato all'esperienza offerta. Il museo Castiglioni decisamente vale una visita e il vostro tempo!
Ottima esposizione di reperti etnografici e archeologici. Consigliata la visita guidata con Marco figlio di archeologo Castiglioni, può capitare di incontrare lui stesso. Oltre all'esposizione permanente organizzano mostre temporanee , tutte prodotte con reperti recuperati dai fratelli Castiglioni e molti video e foto girati sempre da loro negli anni 70 unici al mondo. Bellissimo il parco adiacente l'esposizione e la villa Toeplitz.
Un gioiello all'interno del meraviglioso parco di villa toeplitz. Grande merito alla famiglia Castiglioni per curare un museo cosi' affascinante per adulti ma anche per bambini . Le guide poi sono il fiore all'occhiello (in particolare noi abbiamo avuto il piacere di esser accompagnati da Sara) , spiegano il tutto con dovizia di particolari senza mai far cadere un attimo nella noia il visitatore, raccontando anche numerosi aneddoti capitati nel corso degli anni alle numerose spedizioni degli indomiti fratelli Castiglioni. Molto brave le guide, più reperti unici di quanto pensassi, una passione per la ricerca che è ben evidente nell'opera di fratelli Castiglioni e che prosegue con il figlio. Una bella mostra di una realtà, le popolazioni africane in via d'estinzione, che conoscevo superficialmente. Bravi
Un affascinante viaggio tra archeologia e etnologia, tra deserto e savana, tra mito e realtà. Un’esperienza indimenticabile raccontata con reperti unici. Il Museo Castiglioni nasce grazie alla donazione, alla città di Varese, di migliaia di preziosi reperti da parte dei fratelli Alfredo e Angelo Castiglioni che, per 60 anni, hanno condotto missioni di ricerca e documentazione etnologica e archeologica soprattutto in Africa.
Siamo stati accompagnati in un museo veramente ricco con una visita guidata molto accurata.
