We were in Venice from 22-24 June and took the public ferry on Water Bus Vaporetto Line 1 along the Grand Canal. Line 1 is a very, very busy bus line admittedly, this was the tourist season. We got off at the Salute ACTV stop which is virtually in front of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute and close to the Sina Centurion Palace 5-star hotel and its trendy restaurant that overlooks the Grand Canal, and also close to a number of other bars and restaurants as well as to a number of galleries and museums including the Accademia Gallery, the Punta della Dogana museum and the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. We walked from Salute to the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. The Dorsoduro district is beautiful, charming and distinctive with many unique shops and amazing views. It's definitely worth a visit. This is a beautiful district of Venice.

Great station to get off and see the opposite side of the Grand Canal. Also the Basilica is directly in front of it. Enter you can get right back on within an hour of your one-way ticket and take the next up to the square. So I would definitely do this prior to going to the San Marco's Square stop.
By far the cheapest and finest way to get across the grand canal to see the Basilica di Santa Maria and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. It costs just 2 to hop on a two-man gondola. You have to perch in the sides unless you are very brave, and can stand like the locals.
