St Catherine’s lighthouse first came into service circa 1840. In 1875 the height of the elegant 3-tier octagonal tower was reduced substantially as - like its predecessors - its light was often shrouded in mist. The two St Catherine's lighthouse towers are locally called 'the Cow and the Calf'. Attached to the east side is the former Head Lighthouse Keeper’s house of a single-storey with curved front & round-headed window facing east. This lighthouse was one of the first in the world to be illuminated by electric light, being fitted with it in 1888, later replaced by the now rare 'Fresnel' lens rotation mechanism. The Old St Catherine's Lighthouse (List Entry Number: 1291413) & The Old St Catherine's Lighthouse Keeper's Quarters (List Entry Number: 1219568) both have Historic England, Heritage Category: Listing Grade: II status, but are no longer open to visitors STOP PRESS Sep-20: an application for listed building works has been submitted to remove the rotating 'Fresnel' lens/glass optic from St Catherine's lighthouse.

Very interesting lighthouse - guided tours bring the history to life. You can only pay in cash so bear that in mind - they don't get any coverage down there for a card machine. It's also a bit of a trek down to the lighthouse from the closest parking spaces so be prepared for a walk, even harder uphill on the way back, but well worth the effort!
beautiful lighthouse. can't think of a more picturesque place to be on a blue-sky day!
Well worth the effort lovely little place run by people who love and know what they are doing. Just beware it's easy to get to but harder to get back up the hill. The light house climb is not too bad (bit narrow) with a ladder. At the top it's very warm if warm outside But the view is worth it.
Wonderful location at the southern most point of the island, with great walks! Can be a bit stormy in winter however still great! Lighthouse trip good too with views at the top!
