It takes a dedicated stair climb to get up to the Ristorante Bar Al Castello, where you are rewarded by a great view from the dining area and terrace. But you can get an even better view by paying a small fee to continue the stair climb up to the castle itself. And unfortunately, the view is about all the restaurant has going for it. Neither the food nor the service was bad by any means, and the complementary lemoncello when we paid was a nice touch. But we enjoyed such wonderful food and service during our two weeks in Italy that Al Castello stood out as relatively mediocre at best. Several other members of our tour group ate there as well (we were own our own for lunch), and that was the general consensus of the group.

The view is only positive thing of the place. The food is not worth the price and you are not allowed to pay by card, something unbelievable nowadays even in Italy. Just one suggestion for everyone that are reading DON’T GO!!!
By name, it looks like a castle, built on the sea cliff. Amazing views. Food is of average Italian level. Grandma seems to be the only cashier there.
Our waiter was really excellent. His prattle was amusing as all heck. The food was fine, the house wine was better. The view was awesome. We were lucky and got in without a reservation. I imagine that during the busy months this would not have been the case.
I would suggest that this is the premier location in Vernazza to have lunch! Views are awesome, food is great, wine is cold! You have to work for your lunch by climbing up to the castle. Worth it
