T

this is Kafkaesque

I was only a young man when I was drafted, I was still dreaming of the girl next-door while I sat in a plane heading as far from her as a man could. The things I saw there, the things I did there, tormented me. Each time I closed my eyes I was imprisoned in my own past, for decades I wore this cross on my back. The weight of that horror twisted me in many ways, it made me hate myself, and I am ashamed to say that it made me hate the people of Vietnam as well. For a life time my heart has been consumed with spite and resentment. But all of that changed, it all fell away one night in Birmingham town centre. I left my hotel to get drunk, like I often did when the voices of the fallen screamed inside my head, I ended up at 'Vietnamese Street Kitchen' in a drunken haze. Perhaps my addled mind was seeking something familiar in the overwrought hell it had created. whatever the reason was for my being there, I will be forever grateful that I was, because from the very first taste of the food I was at peace. The sound of the crispy chicken replaced the anguished screams of dying soldiers, the smell of roasted vegetables covered the smell of napalm charred bodies, the taste of sesame oil washed the taste of blood from my mouth at last. I stayed there until it closed, but my mind was open for the first time in years. I left that restaurant not only full of expertly prepared, reasonably priced food, but also full of hope. After more than fifty years of anger and despair, I am able to forgive the people of Vietnam, I am able to forgive my country for sending me there, and I am able to forgive myself. While I await my order from 'Vietnamese Street Kitchen' tomorrow morning, I will look at myself in the mirror, and I will smile at what I see for the first time in half a century, I will see a young man again, a man who has finally come home from the war.

Very friendly and helpful staff, and pretty good albeit basic food. Unfortunately the bahn mi was unavailable when I went and that's what I wanted to try, but the food I did get was well prepared and tasted lovely.

Great casual place for some brilliant Vietnamese food. For our first experience we highly enjoyed it. The wings, ribs and prawns we're the best dishes from starters. I would definitely recommend the mains too.

Amazing food, tastes completely authentic. The starters are probably the best bits, great for sharing tapas-style. Went during the 50% off eat out to help out scheme. Based on that, the price was amazing, but a little bit expensive normally. Portion sizes seemed completely inconsistent - king prawn summer rolls were three huge rolls full of king prawns, beef curry was an entire joint of beef (enough for three people); however, bao buns were small and fried chicken with rice was a tiny portion compared to the beef.

Utterly fantastic, three of us went and had four different dishes, which we all loved. Pic is the lemongrass beef and rice (ruined presentation my own!), which was fabulous - beef was chunky and falling apart. Watch out for the hot sauce, it's a \builder\! And the total including drinks (booze license coming this week apparently)? 36. Incredible value for such fresh, tasty food.
