Great museum. Depicts glorious history of India, there are portrays, pictures and information about Swami Vivekananda, the stories about him is shown in a easy, creative manner. Overall art, cultural museum is really nice and good maintained. Due to corona issues 3D and 4D shows are currently not running. Their is also book store if anyone wants to purchase history and Swami Vivekananda books. The aura and felling of the whole place is very peaceful. One can complete visiting the museum in around 1 hr if he goes through and read all things like wisdom words, stories etc

Following information are collected through books and word of mouth from others. Vivekanandar House in chennai was earlier known as Ice House. In 1842 this building was constructed by Fredrik Tudor who was a British business man to store Ice Blocks. He used to import ice blocks and store it in this building. This building is situated just opposite to Marina Beach (Bay of Bengal). Later in 1880 this building was purchased by an advocate (Madras High Court) called Biligiri Iyengar and did some modifications as residential house. Meanwhile Swamy Vivekananda went to Chicago to participate in "FIRST WORLD'S PARLIAMENT OF RELIGIONS" which was held in 11-Sep-1897. After the successful speech in Chicago, 4 years later he returned to India and reached Chennai in 06-Feb-1897, he was arranged to stay in this house. He was stayed here and delivered some speaches till 14-Feb-1897. 9 Days he has stayed here and Ramakrishna Mutt followers are celebrating those 9 days as (Navarathri). After years later in 1914 TN Govt took this building and used it for running a Training School. 12-Jan-1963 was Birth Centinery of Swami Vivekananda and on that day TN Govt arranged some celebrations in this house where he himself stayed here for few days and remand this building as SWAMY VIVEKANANDAR ILLAM (VIVEKANANDA HOUSE) and gave lease to Ramakrishna Mutt to use this as Museum.

In 1842, Frederic Tudor constructed the building facing the Bay of Bengal as a facility to store ice. In 1880, the business collapsed and the building was sold to Biligiri Iyengar, an advocate in the Madras High Court. Iyengar re-modeled the house and named it Castle Kernan after his friend and judge in Madras High Court. When Swami Vivekananda visited Madras in 1897, he stayed in the building between 6 and 14 February 1897. Later, Ramakrishna Math functioned from the building from 1897 to 1906. In 1914, the building was acquired by the Government of Madras and functioned as a hostel and training school for children run by R. S. Subbalakshmi. In 1963, on the birth Centenary of Swami Vivekananda, the Government of Tamil Nadu renamed the building as 'Vivekanandar Illam' meaning 'Vivekananda House' in Tamil. In 1997, Government of Tamil Nadu leased the building to Ramakrishna Math and it currently houses an exhibition on the life of Swami Vivekananda.

Phone not working... If visited no one is there to guide whether is the museum is even opened or not...yes, Corona issue is understandable but why isn't someone put there at least to attend phones and say it's all completely closed..how come all other museum are managed to open but only V.House is closed.. but I still see some reviews posted by weeks/month ago...Don't know how few are allowed when the main door is locked when we saw...Typical native maindset which is 'whoever suffers I don't care'

Although I did not get time to go inside but from the outside it looks like a building made in the British era. The building is newly painted in light pink with white borders and it's fresh to the eyes. Tickets can be purchased for entrance with typical office times. Please do not consider to visit on Mondays as they are typically closed. Overall the building is pretty neat from outside with newly made looking wide road parallel to the marina beach. An overall day trip to the beach and vivekananda house can be ideal with you family. Admission includes anyone (tourists/ NOn residential indians etc.)
