Vadim Melik-Karamov misled us into doing business with him by telling us he thought we could expand the house. Then what followed was a nightmare. I'm still working with a lawyer trying to get my deposit back from him. He took our deposit without signing a contract with us. He told us he would do a lot for us, including investigate the site and see if it's possible to expand. He went to our city planning department after taking our 2k deposit. The person there told him our unit was in a Precise Plan, \past Zoning Administrators have determined that the development was fully built out at the time of construction and only limited additions within the building envelope have been permitted past\. He was told this but he did NOT tell us the truth and wouldn't follow up with the city on the expandability. After I learnt this directly from the city, Vadim figured that most likely we would not be allowed to expand. Out of his greediness, he decided to do whatever to keep our deposit even though he knew any work around expansion wouldn't be useful to us at all. So he quickly (without a contract with us, without our permission or any our input) drew some poor quality expansion proposals. Then he came to us and insisted to keep all our deposit and want to charge us more. This architect has no bottomlines. You should try everything to stay away from him. Summary of his problems: 1) After he got to know from the city that we wouldn't be allowed to expand, he hid the fact and still went ahead and still did a bunch of work only for the sake of keeping our money. 2) He charges people whatever he wants after you give him a deposit. He would operate without a contract with his clients. That's probably not even legal
