The Maori Waka (War Canoe) is amazing size. Wood work carving very impressive.
The waka house near Hobson Beach shelters the iwi Ngāpuhi’s ceremonial war canoe Ngātokimatawhaorua, the world’s largest. The 35-metre-long canoe needs a minimum of 76 paddlers to handle it safely on the water. It weighs 6 tones when dry and 12 tones when saturated. The Waitangi Treaty Grounds.
I am giving it 5/5. I believe every New Zealander or tourists of New Zealand should do a “pilgrimage” to this grounds. History has been made here. No matter what your views are this place is historic and remains to be. The Maori traditional performance is so moving. Gets me emotional every time. You see a portrayal of their culture. A spiritual culture that transcends race. The songs they sing causes goosebumps. I may not understand the language but you just feel what the song tries to convey. It was a cathartic experience. You go out of the ceremonial ground feeling good. Definitely a must if you happen to be at Paihia. Volunteer as the Chief of the visitors. That will definitely make the experience extra special.
Great place for a visit. The guides add a lot of personality to the visit. A guided tour is well worth the time.
Great guided tour and very interesting museum. There is also a meeting house and two waka taua (war canoes) on site. Definitely worth a visit.
Very nice place to eat in Paihia, staff is nice and you have several options and for all kind of budgets besides ducks and birds are always happy to eat whatever you wont. i do recommend the pumpkin soup, the burger and of course the Hangi
