The only non profit theater in DC shows blockbuster movies and artistic, dedicated films. Beautiful classic interior reminds you that you are visiting the theater, not just the movies. Avalon serves snacks, beverages (soda, apple cider, beer, wine, juices), and in my opinion the best popcorn (it doesn't upset my stomach like a movie theater popcorn might). I love this theater for the experience and feel good supporting a local business. You won't miss visiting! It's also walkable and nearby plenty of restaurants and a stone's toss from Chevy Chase Pavilion, so this is a perfect dinner and a show type of place. You won't be disappointed.

Great old American movie theater with the original large screen and beautiful painted ceiling. New comfortable seats with lots of leg room for us tall ones, and a whole accessible row. Tiny restroom in theatre but I hear there's a bigger one by lobby. Concessions right there including wine & beer plus a few healthy snacks and the usual popcorn and candies. Second smaller upstairs screen. It's a terrific neighborhood asset.

If you're looking for the fancy reclining seats and long lines at the impersonal food counter, Avalon is not for you. But if you want to experience a traditional movie theatre, full of character, with personal service, run by people who care about movies and the movie going public, then Avalon is the best in DC. This beautiful old theatre is a treat and an echo of times gone by...

Well selected films. Renovated historic theater built in the early 1920's. More renovations will be made by the end of 2019 which will make an enjoyable location to watch good films that much better.
