I found Capital Kyokushin-kan about a year ago. I had just moved to DC and didn't know a lot of people in town. While I was simply looking for a dojo where I could get fit again, what I found here was much more than that - I found a warm, welcoming, tightknit community of Karatekas (karate practitioners) who are passionate about pushing each other to be better and stronger. All this wouldn't be possible without Sensei Nick Toma, who is one of the best karate teachers I've encountered in my 16 years of martial arts practice. I highly recommend this Dojo for both beginners and people who are already familiar with full contact (Kyokushin-style) Karate. Logistical note: Classes are usually 5:30pm to 8pm on Monday/Friday and 6pm to 8pm on Wednesday. Parking is usually available in the community center lot, but sometimes you need to find street parking (it's always been free for me). The class takes place in the smaller gym (the first door to the right as you enter the community center). You don't need any special equipment if you're just trying out the class but eventually you'll need a gi and maybe shin pads and gloves if you're interested in sparring. Also, it's better to come 10-15 minutes early to start stretching and prep for class, especially if it's your first class.

Wonderful karate dojo headed by Sensei Nick Toma, a veteran martial artist and karate teacher with over thirty years of experience. The training facility is top notch, housed within the newly renovated Palisades Recreation center. I have been training with Sensei Nick for over 10 years now. His commitment, knowledge and dedication as a martial arts instructor is second to none. The group trains three times a week (Mo., We. and Fr.) from 6-8 and classes are typically comprised of all levels (beginners to 2nd degree black belts) and all age ranges (7 to almost 60 y.o.). If you are an experienced martial artist or would like to give karate a try, I highly recommend stopping by.

I found Sensei Nick by chance after a 20 year break from training. Kyokushin is my life!! This dojo is my family. Sensei Nick is absolutely incredible. No one in the dojo would trade him for the world. He is amazing. He knows what he is doing and will show in the training. He has a passion that is displayed in the dojo. If you want to try karate then this is the place!! It will change your life. Osu!! Sensei Nick Toma!!
