Fantastic customer service and great staff! I love this place. It makes cooking my Mexican family’s recipes easy. They have everything I need
Mexican Fruits is a beloved little shop in the OG Union Market. When you spot the bright blue building, go inside to a room crammed with fresh produce, spices and other household items. If you need more unique produce, this is your spot!
When I first came here, I loved it. The packaged foods like lard, tortillas other latin staples are cheaper than anywhere else, the dried chilis are flavorful and potent. The lines are rarely long, the store is compact and easy to navigate quickly. For those products, I'd give it 5 stars. The problem is hygiene, and their lack of it. I've seen flies infesting the onions en masse. The fresh Chilis on the shelf and sometimes tomatoes are wrinkled. the garlic is older than any garlic I've bought elsewhere, to the point where it's dried out inside. Onions sometimes have rot inside, and my photos, posted here, seem to show mold or rot under the skin. These aren't issues I've had anywhere else consistently in my whole life of grocery shopping. Multiple times I overheard people requesting a case of produce only to open the box and see numerous rotten vegetables/fruit, and then refuse it of course. Some of the cans are dented, which is a health violation and a botulism risk. Even the dried beans in bulk have been hit or miss, sometimes tasting fine and the cheapest you'll find, sometimes they were old and cooked unevenly. I'm fine with ripe or overripe produce, but selling inedible food is just dangerous and a waste of everyone's time, everyone's going to be sorting through the same pile of crusty onions or whatever when the store should just throw them out. The bulk brown rice was good, and the refrigerated produce generally looked fine. I also noticed multiple workers wearing masks improperly, with masks not covering their nostrils. You're better off going to Panam Market for produce, that is the premier latin market in town and their high turnover ensures their produce is always fresh. If you're already at Union Market, the produce may suffice, and the pantry goods are great anyway. They do have big bags of onions at Mexican Fruits that look ok, but I've never bought them due to their size.
My favorite place to get groceries! Their products are unwrapped, which is my favorite part. You can support a small business, family-owned shop all while saving money & the environment. You really can’t lose. Cheap price, great service, great produce - make sure you are going to eat produce within 2-3 days of purchase. Especially fruits like peaches, mangos, etc. Bomb aśš avocados & great herbs here. An entire expanded selection of spices - especially those for Spanish & Mexican cuisine - that you can purchase by the gram. You can also get bulk goods like beans & rice. Delish!
