I am a parent : my son and my daughter both went to Wayland Union High School. My son graduated in 2014 and my daughter will be a junior for the 2017-18 school year. I heard a lot of bad hype about this school, talk of it being really horrible due to drugs and bullying, before enrolling my teens here. Those rumors were unfounded. Neither of my kids had any problems with bullying; when bullying does occur the staff are quick to step in and step up to eradicate it. As to drugs, she assures me they may be available and a drug culture exists \in secret\ but that occurs at almost every school. Neither of my children experienced any pressure to do drugs or buy them, nor were they ever invited to a party where kids were getting drunk or high. Of course, they themselves make it known that these things are not their \scene.\ The teachers and counselors seem to care and encourage lackluster students like my son to get their act together and graduate, and opportunities for more industrious students like my daughter for advanced placement and college credit is substantial. Also the office staff have always been positive, helpful and professional. We care nothing for sports but the school has strong programs and most people in the community are very supportive of the athletic programs, the free athletic center usage for students has been a boon for my daughter. My biggest complaint is the lack of budget for arts and foreign language programs. There's this great Performing Arts Building with state of the art equipment and a very mean and measly budget for the arts programs. They can't afford to put on a high school musical? Really?? And more choices in foreign language would so benefit the college bound students. I guess the money goes to sports, and most of the community is probably okay with that. So overall, I have felt the school does a creditable job and is above average overall.
