Wels, Austria
Friedhofstraße 67
N/A
In the center aisle of the cemetery is the cemetery cross, to the left and right of it two memorial plaques with the inscription "For Austria's freedom gave their lives" with the 31 names of resistance fighters were placed. The oldest small monument in Welsau, dating from 1511, is the “Gothic pillar of light rafting mine”. It used to be used by the raftsmen as a source of light and is also located there. The Heroes' Cemetery and the war memorial are also located at the "Old Cemetery". The war memorial, on which the double-headed eagle holds a bear and a wolf in its claws, serves as a symbol of the victory that was still expected in 1916 and is intended to point to the former opponents Russia (Russian bear) and Italy (Roman she-wolf). The names of the Welsers who fell in World War I can be seen on the memorial plaques. Next to the memorial are the so-called heroes' graves. This is where the fallen soldiers of both world wars find their final resting place. In 1934 Major Johann Charwat's grave of honor was erected in front of the monument.
