We were new to Des Moines last year, and called Steve to do our taxes because we received a flyer in the mail from him that promised lower rates by going with him. Our taxes were a bit more complicated than in previous years due to our move and my husband's business, but we were expecting our cost to be under 600 as it had been well less than that in Chicago. Steve is not technically competent with computers, and we had all of our files organized digitally, so it ended up being a nightmare trying to get him to be able to open and/or print the files. He also charged us for all of his time spent figuring out technology that our previous tax accountants didn't have any issue with. If I'd known it would be such a problem, I would have just printed everything out for him. Lastly, I think this says it all. He charged us over 1200 to do our taxes. Two state filings federal a small business. He got us a great refund but then basically took most of it with his fees. I will give him that he is very knowledgable about the ways to maximize a refund. This year we took our business to TaxDoctor, and they thought the amount that he charged us was insane. This year, we had one less state filing, but we paid more than 70% less than the amount he charged us! And it took so much less time overall. Would not recommend.
