My husband was Dr. Coleman’s client. He was perfectly acceptable as long as all my husband needed was an annual physical or a sick visit; when he began to have chronic issues....well, that was a different story. My husband has rheumatoid arthritis, but he wouldn’t have gotten tested for it had he not thrown a literal fit in Dr. Coleman’s office and demanded to be tested for everything that could possibly be causing the horrific joint pain and swelling he was having. The pain was so bad he was going to the acute care clinic regularly (approximately once every two weeks) for steroid injections to control the pain and swelling. He had so many steroids, both oral and injections, that he started having abnormally high blood sugars and had to start treatment for diabetes. When Dr. Coleman finally agreed to order the tests, he did so while making my husband feel like an utterly uneducated, demanding, entitled, whinny jerk. This is a man that in all our time together, I have never seen him call in sick to work and only seen him take off early due to unexpected illness once. The RA was causing SIGNIFICANT swelling to several joints along with fever to the area and visible redness. It was jumping from joint to joint. After his third or fourth visit with the same issue, all within a three month period, what would it hurt an insured person to rule RA out? Instead, he talked down to my husband, made him feel stupid for advocating for himself, made sure he told my husband how ridiculous the testing was and only then did he actually order it. I get that some clients overreact. I get some are hypochondriacs. But you have to rule things out and take a client’s complaints at face value, as certain things are subjective. Just our opinion.
