I was a scout as youth growing up in Western Massachesetts. Although my scouting lessons had served me well throughout my lifetime, I had lost track of the scouting movement until my son came home from 1st grade with a Cub Scout flyer. I was told during that initial recruitment meeting that scouting was the best way that I, as a parent, could make the most of the short amount of time we have to positively impact our children. Boy, was that the truth! We are seven years in and my son is getting the best that scouting has to offer. And the great thing is- as an adult volunteer, I get to experience this amazing program side by side with my son. I would not trade it for anything.

Scouting has changed not only my families life but my own as well. I really love how being part of the scouting movement has brought my family even closer. I work retail and my hours are long and hard, but I’m very lucky that I work for a company that promotes family values. That has allowed me to be part of Scouts BSA since 2013. I’ve been able to follow and promote the scouting since 2013 when my son was a Tiger a cub with Pack 125 in Wellington. I have been able to see him grow and mature and make a lot of friends. Now my son is with The Boy Scout Troop 125 and is now learning leadership, growth, proper decision making. My son also has a chance to do a lot of great high adventures, something that I could not think about when I was his age. Chase has done snorkeling, hiking mountains in North Carolina and New Mexico, he also will be going to Minnesota this winter to be part of the Northern Tier expedition. The adventures in scouting are limitless and as a former Cubmaster and now Assistant Scoutmaster, I have a front row seat to seeing my sons growth. I thank the Boy Scouts of America for giving my son the chance to succeed, I can’t wait until he becomes an Eagle Scout!

We moved into this council in June. Since then I have never felt so unwanted as a volunteer. I’m glad that my son was able to earn his Eagle Scout Rank in Maryland before we moved. Since being in this council trying to get involved in Sea Scouts has been disappointing. This is a group within the BSA that is drastically underserved within this council. There is just not the support you would expect with the amount of shore line, registered boats in this state, the 4 power squadrons and 6 coast guard auxiliary units. I have live in 4 other councils prior to this council 2 of which were very landlocked that had more support from volunteers and council then this council. Our family came down here thinking that Sea Scouts would be huge and my son desired to earn his Quartermaster rank, which is a rank that only about 20 scouts nation wide earn a year and the disappointment of the only way he can do it now is if he goes the route of doing it on his own.
