What a great museum! Full of great exhibits and loads of information about the rich mining history on the west coast. There is a mine exhibit you can go into and watch a neat video showing the old mine operations. We spend about an hour here but you could spend a bit longer if you read everything. Adults 10, children under 5 are free. If you are visiting Westport make sure you pop in here and brush up on the history.

Full respect to the workers and their families over the years in scratching out a hard living amongst the dirt. Was a tough life for all. Thanks to the museum for bringing this to life, and giving us an opportunity to understand.

Wow!! This museum had a lot of variety and made learning about Westport fun. I usually don’t like Museums but this one grabbed my attention as soon as I walked through the door. I learned a lot about Westport and was surprised to read about a shared link to my family home country of Samoa. Take 50 cent pieces with you to see the dredge pistons in action and don’t forget to ring the bells!

The students enjoyed dressing up and ringing the bells. Lots of good stories about early years and great photos.
