The business of fishing and the management of fisheries is constantly evolving. The complexities of balancing environmental policies, regulatory compliance with social, economic, and/or cultural responsibilities has never presented such a challenge. Lobster fishermen in southwest, Nova Scotia, have witnessed an ever-increasing interest in their waters from offshore exploratory drilling, wind farm proposals, pipeline expansions, marine protected areas, the protection of endangered species particularly, Right Whales and stock assessments. It is imperative that fishermen are both privy to the changes/issues that are impacting the lobster industry but that they are also in a position to voice their concerns and provide insight to the decision and policy makers. Now, more than ever, fishermen must join forces as one organized collective voice. Coldwater Lobster Association was established in 2014 to address these concerns by employing a forward-thinking approach with an open and honest communication that fosters a climate of trust between fishermen and policy makers. Establishing an association with a structured membership regime is the best approach to facilitate the emerging needs of fishermen in Lobster Fishing Area 34 (LFA 34) to ensure a safe, sustainable and prosperous lobster fishery for current and future generations. Coldwater Lobster Association works with industry stakeholders, government agencies and others for the betterment of the lobster industry as we move into the future. A strong fishing industry will allow potential young fishermen the opportunity to stay in Nova Scotia and will help our rural fishing communities thrive. Coldwater Lobster Association is governed by elected Board of Directors comprised of lobster licence holders holding lobster licences in LFA 34 who have a vested interest in the lobster industry and its future.
