This church is a very impressive structure both internally and externally. The tombs inside have parallels with some of those inside York Minster and it is clear that the Fauconbergs and Wombwells (from the very close Newburgh Priory) have been benefactors here. As is often the case, the church is open during the day and it is lovely look inside. The external appearance has an odd octagonal tower which is not common at all.

Beautiful church in a stunning location at the top of the village immaculate inside and out
A superb example of an English Anglican church sitting in the beautiful village of Coxwold in the Vale of York. Well worth a visit if you are in the area the village has been a winner of a number of national awards.
St Michael's Church in Coxwold dates from the 1420s but stands on a site where there has been a church since the 8th century. The first church was mentioned in a letter from Pope Paul I to King Eadbert of Northumbria. The current church is very distinctive, with its octagonal tower topped with pierced battlements and crocketed pinnacles. Inside, the church features largely 18th century furnishings. The chancel features a highly unusual tongue-shaped communion rail. Also in the chancel are four monuments, including painted Jacobean tomb and a white marble baroque tomb. They are memorials to the Viscount and Earls Fauconburg, all members of the Belasyse family.
