The castle is half in ruins. The exposition is quite interesting. More English information would be great.
Must-see in Zhovkva for history lovers
The Zhovkva Castle occupies the principal square of the town of Zhovkva in Ukraine. It was founded by Polish Hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski as his fortified residence. Construction began in 1594 and was mostly completed in 1606. In the 17th century King John III turned Zholkovsky castle in one of the most beautiful palaces in Europe, making it his summer residence. Of famous guests Palace visited Ivan Mazepa and the emperor Peter I.
I liked the castle! I liked town and history of the castle, and castle guides too! The tickets costs a little, but I advise to order personnal guide. There are English- and Polish- speaker guides here. And they will talk you many interesting detailes about object. The castle is repareing now and consuming a lot of budjet money. I think we'll learn to spend budjet money more productive. There were so many visitors when I have been to here! I reccomend this castle everyone!
What a pity no much money to save the castle and save the history attached to it
The castle is reminiscent of so much history of Western Ukraine, much of it forgotten and even more erased during the soviet days and WWII. While the exterior of it may some day be restored, the interior is long gone and will never represent the original castle. The castle served as a middle school at one time, and an apartment complex. Sadly, Zhovkva has a lot of its history buried under the ground, more than anyone will ever know about.
